Article Title:
MARITAL ADJUSTMENT AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES FOR EDUCATED COUPLES
Abstract: The study investigated relationship between marital adjustment and communication strategies for educated couples in Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Descriptive research design was adopted for this study. The target population was all educated married couples in four local government areas. Purposive and stratified random sampling procedure were used in selecting twenty-five women and twenty–five men from each of the selected local government. Two instruments were used for the collection of data. One was the Dyadic Adjustment Scale (an adopted instrument). The other, communication strategies scale among married couples, which was developed by the author. The reliability coefficient of the two instruments were found to be 0.76 and 0.82, respectively. Three null hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 alpha level of significance. Simple percentage and inferential statistics which included Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Chi-square statistical techniques were used to test the three null hypotheses. The first hypothesis indicated that there was no significant relationship between marital adjustment and strategies of communication. The second hypothesis showed that there was no significant relationship between the length of marriage and marital adjustment. The third hypothesis demonstrated that there was no significant relationship between marital adjustments on the basis of gender. As a result of these findings, recommendations were made which includes the need to incorporate counselling programmes for married couples and those intending to get married so as to adequately prepare them for marital challenges. |
